Who Is God?

God is the most wonderful Person in the universe. Man seeks after Him because God has put the desire to know Him in every human heart. There are many things we can point out about God to help us know Him.

First of all, there are His transcendent characteristics. These qualities set Him above all other creatures in the universe.

He is omnipotent (i.e. all powerful, almighty). His power means that He can do anything He desires. Unlike man whose power is limited, God's power is unlimited and is over all. He controls the whole universe by His power. Consequently, He has the power to meet every need.

This is why we can pray to God about any problem which we may have and He will help us. We know that through his almighty power and according to His will He can do all things and will hear our prayer in time of need. Jesus said in Matthew 28:18 "All authority (i.e. power) in heaven and on earth has been given to me..." As God, He rules the universe, for the Bible says: "He (Jesus) is before all things, and in Him all things hold together". In other word, if Jesus were to go out of existence the whole universe would fly apart!

God also is omnipresent (i.e. is present everywhere). This is not to say that He is in everything and that everything together makes up God (Pantheism). Rather, God is over all and is present throughout His universe. He is a distinct Being and rules over all. Jesus in Matthew 28:20 asserts as God, "And behold, I am with you always even to the end of the world." Psalm 139 is a great repository of truth about God. Be sure to read it and gain further understanding about the God of the Bible.

God is omniscient (that is all-knowing). The Bible declares that God knows when we sit down or get up and discerns our every thought (Psalm 139:1-6). The psalmist in awe writes "Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain (grasp) it.") It is overwhelming to believe that God knows everything about me. This is all the more reason to bring our every thought to Him, for He knows it all anyway.

The darkness does not hide a person from God. Again the psalmist records: "even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day,for darkness is as light with you". The apostle Paul teaches concerning Christ Jesus, our Lord, in Colossians 1:15-16 "He is the image of the invisible God, the prototype of all creation. For by Him (Jesus Christ) all things were created,in heaven and on earth... all things were created through Him and for Him." Look up also John 1: 1-18.
Jesus is the living Word of God, the Creator.

God is also immutable (i.e. unchangeable). The whole universe is always changing.
Since God is perfect in every way, he will never change. His Word (the Bible) will never change. For this reason, we can always believe in His promises, for they do not change. His Word is always reliable and true forevermore. For example, if you give your heart to Jesus He will save you forever no matter what happens (John 1:12,
Revelation 3:20).

God is everlasting. He is the One Who has always existed. The psalmist proclaims: "Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting You are God. At the burning bush God instructed Moses to call Him the "I Am" (Yahweh or Jehovah) because God is always the ever-living God. Jesus took this same designation when He said "Before Abraham was, I Am (John 8:58)." To whom will you compare God?", Isaiah (40: 25) asks. God replies: "Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; His understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might He increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted;
but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint (Isaiah 40:28-31).

Although nature reveals something of God (Romans 1:20-23)to us, Jesus is the embodiment of God (Colossians 2:9 "In Him the whole fullness of God dwells in bodily form". If you would know God, look at Jesus as He is presented in the Bible (especially in the New Testament). Ask Him to enter you and take over your
life. You will never regret it. And you will know God personally as your Friend and Saviour in Jesus Christ our Lord.
