Poem "Deliver Me"

The following poem was written by Amy Carmichael who was a missionary in India for many years. She started and directed the Donovar Fellowship. This fellowship operated orphanages for babies who were abandoned shortly after they were born. They were placed right at the entrances to pagan temples where they were often raised to become temple prostitutes. Amy gave her life to serve her Lord in India. Arriving in India as a young woman, she never returned home again to Ireland. She had very excruciating arthritis and spent the later part of her life in one room from which she directed this important ministry. Her trust in Jesus shines forth in this poem, "Deliver Me".

DELIVER ME

From prayer that asks that I may be
Sheltered from winds that beat on Thee,
From fearing when I should aspire,
From faltering when I should climb higher,
From silken self, O Captain free
Thy soldier who would follow Thee.

From subtle love of softening things
From easy choices, weakenings
(Not thus are spirits fortified
Not this way went the Crucified)
From all that dim Thy Calvary,
O Lamb of God, deliver me.

Give me the love that leads the the way,
The faith that nothing can dismay,
The hope no disappointments tire,
The passion that will burn like fire;
Let me not sink to be a clod;
Make me Thy fuel, Flame of God.

Someone has said:
LIFE
Life is a burden; bear it.
Life is a duty; dare it.
Life is a thorn crown; wear it.
