Will The Tail Wag The Dog (US/UN)?

Around the world, President George W. Bush and his administration have been criticized for entering Iraq unilaterally. Of course, Britain was with him, but few other nations. Around the world, the cry has gone up that the US president should have waited for the United Nations to act -this in spite of the fact that the world waited for ten years for the Iraq to comply with UN resolutions! France, Germany and other European nations would have eventually come on side with the Americans, many argued. If one examines history, however, one will have to conclude that it is debatable that France would ever have stood with the America, an English-speaking nation. Up to now, France has not yet been able to get over the downfall of Emperor Napoleon and her perceived place as the centre of mankind's nation universe. Imagine, England, originally a backwater island nation, upstaging France so that today most of the world's commerce and education is done in English not French. In addition, English has emerged as the lingua franc of the whole electronic world through the Internet. Academically, anything of note is republished in English almost immediately if English is not its original language of publication. Scores of nations have English as their second language in their school system including, of late, France herself! These developments gall France to the core!

The question remains, did President Bush and Prime Minister Blair act wisely in going into Iraq with their armies?

I've asked myself this question over and over again. Certainly the coalition of the US and Britain and some other countries did a first class job initially in winning the war in Iraq and capturing Sadam Hussein. The UN has no armies. How could it have contained Iraq without the support of the US and Britain and their nofly zones? To say that the US should have waited until the UN gave permission for such military action in Iraq is like saying the tail should wag the dog! As a Canadian, I've been ashamed that our government made the decision not to go with the Americans and British into Iraq. The US is our closest ally and friend and our most important trading partner by far. I've been so thankful that not too great a US retaliation took place because of the Chretien government's decision. Surely this shows the kindness of America to a friend. No doubt our lumber and cattle disputes with the US were in no way helped through such an anti-American policy in this country. Thank God our new Prime Minister, Paul Martin, is an experienced diplomat and values our friendship with the United Staes highly.

Let's look at other places where we waited for the UN to act. Ruwanda is one notable example. While the UN had their debates in the General Assembly (which seems to be at least 75% anti-American), innocent people were slaughtered by the thousands (over 800,00 to be exact)in Ruwanda. In Kosovo, if NATO had not gone in, ethnic cleansing would have continued resulting in the murder and dislocation of hundreds of thousands of innocent people. NATO helped the UN in its pacification of Bosnia and Serbia. Honestly, at times, the UN reminds one of a toothless tiger (no armies, no money, no resolve!!). If it were not for the UN system of governance with a Security Council with permanent members who have veto power, the UN would have been relegated to the archives of history long ago. Often the only thing that has saved the UN is the ability of member states like the US and Britain to act unilaterally when necessary for world peace. I think Kofi Annan was ill-advised to rebuke President George W. Bush and the US recently about going into Iraq - it smacked of a pathetic effort to influence the American presidential election.

As a Christian, I am painfully aware that, as I look out on to our troubled world, there is no human being who can solve our problems anyway. They are simply too complicated and onerous! On a coming day when "the kingdom of this world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and he will reign forever and ever (Revelation 11:15)" - that is when the world will be delivered from despots, corrupt leaders, selfish industrialits, and cruel sadists who mercilessly keep their people in bondage. I, for one, wait for that day. Even so, come, Lord Jesus!

It is hard for me to believe that another year has passed and Christmas is just about here. God has been so good to us. Since I last wrote you, He has blessed our family with two more grandchildren (Morgan, a girl, born to Steve and Andrea at the end of August) and Kennedy, a girl, born to Phil and Casie at the end of September. Morgan weighed 7.6 lbs. while Kennedy weighed in at 10.6 lbs. Now we have seven grandsons and five granddaughters. They keep us in stitches with all their antics. Except for Mark and Anne, all the rest of the kids are talking about have more babies still, so we are not done yet. Ultimately, I wonder how many there will be. Please rejoice with us that all our grandchildren are being raised in the ways of the Lord and in good churches.
While surfing the Internet one day recently, I noticed a section on "blogging". I went to a site maintained by Google and found I could get a free blogsite for myself to enable me to comment on what is happening in the world today and how the Bible relates to it. So, I have my own website now courtesy of Google. Here it is:
wwwjesusthethinker.blogspot.com (NB. Please do not put a period after "www". If you do it will not go through.)
Now I can comment to my heart's content on what is current today and apply the Bible. So far, I've written the following articles:
**How Would Jesus Vote? (on the American election ** Values To The Core! (why Bush won the election)
** Should Yasser Arafat Be Buried In Jerusalem? ** Will The Tail Wag the Dog (US/UN relationships)?
I have at least twenty more articles in mind and the one I'm currently working on is: "So It's All Right To Say No To God, eh?" (Same-sex marriage and the Anglican Church). Please encourage your friends and loved ones to look up my website. Do pray and may the L:ord bless this special effort at being a chaplain on the Internet.
For some time, we have prayed that the Lord would send us another chaplain to help in the work. How God has worked! As you know, we haven't any money to pay a chaplain. Even I receive very little (mainly just money for gas and office expenses). So how could we afford another staff member? Well, through various circumstances an outstanding volunteer who has her B.Sc. in nursing and has worked with the Federal government for almost twenty-five years in disease control has been able to take an early pension and so will be able to give herself fulltime to our community chaplaincy work. Louise LaRoche, originally from Quebec and fully bi-lingual, God willing, will be appointed by our Board in two weeks as our associate chaplain. She is fully trained in the Alpha ministry and has been working with Food On The Corner downtown (streetpeople). She is just completing her B.Min. degree. Of all the workers I know, no one has a warmer heart for the Lord and toward people than Louise. Her attitude is so honouring to Christ. Best of all, we have already worked together enough to know that we are very compatible with each other. It is quite possible that we will take on chaplaincy students to work with us and help train them for community chaplaincy ministry, too. Metrotown Mall is undergoing quite a facelift right now. Millions of dollars are being spent by its new owners to expand the mall and redecorate it. When finished, it will be the second largest shopping mall in Canada (West Edmonton Mall is still the largest). We thank the Lord for the opportunity to have weekly services at Metrotown Centre on Sundays. Please pray that God will send us dedicated people to help us in this effort. Inasmuch as they are rennovating our area of the mall during Novermber and December, we've had to move elsewhere. Last Sunday we started meeting in other facilities. We holding our Sunday outreach at three seniors' lodges, doing our Sunday services in junction with the residents. Last Sunday's program was exciting and went very well. Please continue to bear us up in your prayers.
As stated before, our family continues to multiply. Kristi and Mike at the end of December had a healthy baby boy (Drew). He's now almost walking. Steve and Andrea along with Phil and Casie have new babies. Phil is on a year's sabbatical from Trinity University. Mark and Anne continue their work at Peace Baptist. They have also started an organic cereal line ("Quick Start" - 12 grains). Maureen is the model grandmother and the grandchildren love her to distraction. As you know, July 20th, I turned 65 years of age. God has been so goodl Our little fledgling church organized a wonderful 65th celebration for me at the mall. It was very heartwarming. I would like to thank all who sent in contributions (pictures, comments, etc.) Our scrapbook is full! On Remembrance Day, Mark, our oldest, turned 40 yrs - hard to believe! We can honestly say as we look back on all those years, "God works all things together for good to those who love Him" (Rom. 8: 28). Psalm 16: 8 is still my life's verse, "I have set the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved." Surely, the secret to triumphant living is to keep our eyes on Jesus.
How I want to thank several of you for your gifts to help our Community Chaplaincy. With an ever expanding ministry, we need much more income. Please send a gift for Christmas to us to help in the work.. God will bless you for it. Please make cheques payable to: "Community Chaplaincy". All gifts of $10 or more will be receipted for income tax purposes. If you would like to give regularly to Community Chaplaincy, please send a void cheque and signed authorization for us to debit your account monthly for the amout you specify. Thank-you. Have a great Christmas and an exciting New Year.
We exalt the Son Who Has Become Sovereign Over All!
